Midwives in the UK: Dedication Beyond Duty
It takes a dedicated and special person to embrace the profession of midwifery and unconditionally support a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, and the early days of motherhood. "The Sun" newspaper launched the "Who Cares Win" contest and discovered impressive stories about how these NHS professionals went above and beyond the call of duty. Such incredible stories were submitted that it became difficult to choose the finalists. Nevertheless, today we share with you, in this article, the stories of the finalists for the Best Midwife award in this contest that aims to honour one of the most respected professions in the UK.
VALENTINA BURNETT
A mother who suffered a stroke when she was 39 weeks pregnant nominated this midwife who cared for her baby while she fought for her life in a coma. Natalie Doye collapsed at home a few days before her due date and was airlifted to Southampton Hospital, where her daughter Gracie was born by caesarean section last October. Midwife Valentina Burnett, who also underwent treatment and surgery due to a brain issue, cared for the newborn while Natalie was ill and also supported Natalie's family. A midwife for 23 years, she trained in her home country, Bulgaria, before moving to the UK in 2003.
KAREN STEVENS
Karen Stevens was nominated for supporting some of society's most vulnerable women. She leads a specialized team of midwives who care for expectant mothers, many of whom are victims of domestic violence, others who struggle with mental health issues. The Poppy Team, in Reading, also provides assistance to teenage mothers, trauma or sexual abuse victims, or those with drug or alcohol dependency.
VALERIE FERRY
When Amy McNaughton suffered a rare and potentially fatal complication during the birth of twins, midwife Valerie Ferry sprang into action and held the umbilical cord, saving the life of the second baby. Valerie is a community midwife for NHS Lanarkshire and has embraced this profession for 21 years.
