Known to be the largest city in Hampshire, Southampton, is considered Europe's cruise industry capital, being the busiest cruise terminal in the United Kingdom and Europe, where connections are made to the rest of the world. Hundreds of thousands of emigrants have conquered the country on ships that sail from here, including the famous Titanic.
Located less than two hours from London, Southampton is also the junction of history and modernity: medieval stone walls and a modern shopping center - West Quay South - full of restaurants, shops and services. Existing already in the deep Middle Ages, Southampton currently combines the historic side of the city with modern futuristic architecture, which makes it very charming and incredibly dynamic. Being a city rich in history, it has several medieval monuments, such as the clock tower of the Church of Holy Roth. Right in front, there is a monument commemorating an important historical event, which inscribed the city in public memory: a memorial to the Titanic, which departed from that exact location on its first and last journey, on April 10, 1912.
Southampton is also known for its large number of cultural events, such as the Southampton International Film Festival, and also several museums, such as the SeaCity Museum and the Solent Sky Museum. Another highlight is the Mayflower theater located downtown. For nature lovers, the Common, a park with a vast green area located in the heart of the city of Southampton, is an excellent option for jogging, walking and picnics.
Another asset of Southampton is having one of the twenty largest airports in the United Kingdom. Currently, around 2 million people are transported through Southampton airport. The administration of this infrastructure is the responsibility of Southampton International Airport Ltd.
